Return of the lice…..

spring sports

We are seeing a few kids with lice in different classrooms. So this is a reminder to check your children’s hair for lice. And please report any lice cases to me so I can monitor it at school. I have been checking classrooms randomly to monitor this issue. If you have not received a letter home, then your child’s classroom does not have lice that I have found. With many students playing in spring sports wearing and sharing helmets, this is often how lice are spread. A great website for lice control is ehow.com. Here you can find many different ways to treat lice at home. Any questions please don’t hesitate to call me.

5210 news…

5210Horizontal

I just wanted to share with you all what we have been doing here at Consolidated with our 5210 program. Last fall we took on being a 5210 school. This involves being comited to promoting good eating habits/nutrition, increasing exercise, limiting screen time, and little to no sugar consumption. We formed a comittee who have met a few times. We as a committee decided that there is a lot to accomplish with this program and chose to focus on the exercise portion for this year. We put a grant together and was awarded money from this grant to purchase some items we chose, to increase our exercise in our day here at school. If you noticed the students have been out snow shoeing quite a bit this year with gym class and rec. Those snow shoes were purchased through our grant money. We also made a new walking trail out behind the recreation building which is marked for walking, snow shoeing, geo cashing… We are looking forward to the spring to get out there more. We have formed a walking club called “toe token Thursdays” and we have parent volunteers who come in on recess time to help with this walking club. We have just started this program, but the kids have shown much enthusiasm. We have established “brain stations” throughout the school for those kids who have completed their work, or need a motor break. The student with permission from their teacher can go out in the hall to one of the stations, perform the designated exercise, then return to class. This is to promote exercise, and stimulate the brain to focus more. It also helps kids who have the “wiggles” and just need a break for a few minutes. This helps them return ready to refocus. And lastly, we have purchased a wii system for the gym, with exercise games, many dance pads all for indoor recess, class rewards, or perhaps a birthday celebration with the class instead of sweets. We have used it a couple times and you should see the kids dance! They love it.

If anyone has any other suggestions on boosting exercise in school~ let us know!

As part of our initiative to get the kids active and boost their exercise to 1 hour a day, we have started a walking club here at Consolidated. It will take place during  recess time. Right now to get this started Joanne Abrams and I are looking for some parent volunteers to commit 1-2 hours/month on thursdays from 11:35-12:45 to assist with our endeavor. If you have any interest please call me or Joanne as soon as possible. We hope to start this program after we return from Feb Vacation and take it to the end of the school year. Please help to make this a fun and healthy activity for the students at Consolidated.

THANKS SO MUCH!!!

We are looking for about 10 parents or more to spend recess with students outside walking from about 11:30-12:45pm. Joanne Abrams is organizing this. This program is an incentive to get kids out to boost there exercise. We will have pedometers and walking incentives for the kids. So please contact me or Joanne Abrams if you would like to help!

girl sneezing cartoonCan’t believe that 2011 is here! Where does the time go? Just a few things to mention, if your child has a fever at home, PLEASE don’t send them to school with tylenol/motrin on board. This encourages the spread of infection/ disease. They should be home resting and be fever free without medications for 24 hours. I have been seeing many kids in my office at lunchtime not feeling well and have a fever which many state their parents gave them medicine in the morning before school. We want to keep our kids healthy and the sick ones need to recouperate at home. THANKS!

nutrition(3)

At school we are trying to promote healthy food choices for snack and lunch. We are also promoting increased exercise. We have become a 5210 school as of this past September. You may ask what is 5210? Visit www.letsgo.org to find out more about it! It is all about eating right, being active, and getting healthy! The 5210 committee is working on a few things for the school~ a new 1/2 mile trail out behind the rec soccer field for walking, geocashing, snow shoeing… With our 5210 grant money we are developing this trail for school and public use. We also purchased snow shoes for our school so the students will go out for gym class or extra bonus time. (weather permitting and snow) We will be developing more indoor exercise opportunities for use by the students durring indoor recess, or class choice time.  So stay tuned…

As we plug through these long winter months, we encourage each student to eat right! get plenty of sleep! and get out there and exercise!                         ice_skating
